Disney patents technology for a theme park Metaverse

By

Disney gets approved for a patent for the technology that will be used in its Metaverse theme park. The patent was awarded by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on the 28th of December 2021. The approval for the patent was filed to the same office way back in mid-2020. The said technology will incorporate augmented reality mechanizations that are set to improve Disney’s theme park experiences.

Where will Disney use this newly-patented technology?

Representatives at Disney explained that the patent allows the company to set up a virtual world simulator in their Metaverse theme park. This technology will be used to track theme park visitors and their actions through their mobile devices. Once data has been received, this mechanization will create interactive attractions designed according to the preference of the visitor.

These attractions are projected as 3D images on the physical places at the theme park like the walls. For example, a fan of the hit movie, Frozen will see Elsa and Anna greeting them. On the other hand, another theme park visitor may see Harry Potter instead. This new technology will require AVR headsets when visiting the Disney theme park.

How Disney sees the future with Metaverse

Around November 2021, Disney held its 4th Quarter Earnings call and their CEO, Bob Chapek, made a statement regarding Disney’s future with Metaverse. He stated that the entertainment giant aims to connect the physical world to the Metaverse, also called the virtual world. By doing so, they will be able to tell stories without any limits in their very own Metaverse world.

Although Disney representatives noted that they have no current plans in using the technology aside from what they previously stated, it is still not something far-fetched. This new patent has shed light on the vision Tilak Mandadi stated in a LinkedIn article back in November 2020. Mandadi, the MGM Resorts chief strategy officer, envisioned the blending of the real world to the digital world to improve theme parks experiences.

Other companies joining the Metaverse

With the approval of this patent, Disney has now joined the race in creating the Metaverse. Recently, Samsung had joined the same race after the company launched a metaverse store at Decentraland and provided entry to its Metaverse. Other companies that are already participating in the construction of the Metaverse include Epic Games, Meta (formerly Facebook), Microsoft, Apple, and many more.
