Arbitrum Experiences Mind-Blowing Traffic Surge, Triggering A ‘Partial Outage’

By
Arbitrum continues to experience block creation failures

Update as of the morning of December 16, 2023:

Arbitrum released an official update on the incident early on the morning of December 16, stating that Inscription – a trend that has been “rampant” on other blockchains such as BNB Chain, Fantom, Avalanche, and TON in recent weeks – was the cause of the surge in transactions on Arbitrum, which led to network congestion.

The incident has been resolved, and Arbitrum is now generating blocks and processing transactions normally.

Data from the blockchain shows that 90% of transactions on Arbitrum before the incident were due to Inscription.

The original article:

X accounts quickly shared information about the Arbitrum incident. And of course, the KOLs who supported Solana (a blockchain that was once ridiculed for its downtime) were the quickest to spread the news.

According to the Arbiscan transaction data explorer, the most recent block on Arbitrum has the number 160384180 and occurred about 1 hour ago.

This is not the first time Arbitrum has experienced a block production outage. The first time the community mentioned Arbitrum and a block production outage was in September 2021.

In addition, the Layer-2 also experienced a few other network-related incidents. Recently in August 2023, Arbitrum experienced an issue with managing ETH balances in fee-paying wallets, causing the network to be unable to process transactions for an hour. In January 2022, Arbitrum experienced an issue with connecting from the Sequencer network.

However, there has still been no official announcement about this phenomenon from the project team. Previously, a similar phenomenon also occurred with BNB Chain. However, at that time, the transaction volume was too large, causing browsers to be unable to display data in real time, leading to the misunderstanding mentioned above.
