Crypto Champions: Super PAC Throws Support Behind Winning Democrats In House Primaries

By

Democratic primary victors in Texas and Alabama received $3.7 million in backing from the Protect Progress Super PAC, fueling their bids for Congress.

A PAC allocated $3.7 million to support Democratic contenders in Texas and Alabama for the 2025 United States House races.

Shomari Figures clinched victory over Anthony Daniels in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District runoff with approximately 61% of votes. He is set to compete against Republican Caroleene Dobson in the upcoming general election on Nov. 5.

Protect Progress Super PAC utilized about $1.7 million, sourced from donors like Coinbase and Ripple Labs, to aid Figures’ campaign from July 2023 to February 2024. Additional funding of $950,000 post-February was allocated for advertisements and polling support.

The Protect Progress Super PAC, aligned with the Fairshake Super PAC, endorses Democratic candidates dedicated to advancing blockchain technology and innovation. It gained notoriety for funding attack ads against Democratic Senate hopeful Katie Porter in California.

Figures’ campaign website highlights cryptocurrency among his initiatives, aiming to foster innovation and address regulatory issues. Protect Progress contributed $400,000, representing 14% of his campaign funds, according to FEC records.

“Shomari believes in working together to support innovation and create good paying jobs for his community and all Americans,” Josh Vlasto, a spokesperson for Protect Progress, told Cointelegraph. “We are proud to support leaders like Shomari on both sides of the aisle.“

According to FEC data, Protect Progress allocated approximately $1 million to bolster Julie Johnson’s candidacy for Texas’ 32nd Congressional District. Despite winning her Democratic primary with 50.4% of the vote in March, Johnson also amassed around $1.3 million in campaign contributions.

Johnson’s campaign website emphasized the importance of the U.S. taking a leading role in crypto and blockchain technology, while urging for clear regulatory guidelines. Following her primary victory, Coinbase’s chief policy officer, Faryar Shirzad, extended congratulations in a post on X.

The upcoming U.S. general election on Nov. 5 will decide the victors of the mentioned congressional seats along with 433 others in the House of Representatives, 34 in the Senate, and the Presidency. It also appears to reflect broader attitudes toward crypto, exemplified by races such as the one featuring Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and attorney John Deaton.
