Creative DAO Snags Rights To Famous Doge Meme Image

By

Project representatives expressed their aim to unite the Doge community by obtaining the license for the renowned Shiba Inu image.

Own The Doge, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) linked to the Shiba Inu meme, announced the acquisition of legal rights to the iconic image associated with the Dogecoin token, currently priced at $0.14.

In an interview with CoinNerd on April 17, leaders of the Own The Doge project, John Monarch and ‘Tridog,’ disclosed their negotiation with Sato Atsuko, the owner of Kabosu, the 18-year-old Shiba Inu famously known for her perplexed expression while seated on a couch. The group secured exclusive licensing and rights for the Doge image, potentially granting them authority over merchandise and other applications of the meme within the cryptocurrency realm.

“I think [the deal] unlocks a lot for corporations, where there’s confusion around copyright,” said Tridog.

Own The Doge stated that with the clarification of the doge image copyright, previously perceived as open to all, opportunities for collaborations with major brands have emerged. The project revealed that they initiated contact with Sato approximately three years ago and successfully brokered a deal to acquire the rights to Kabosu’s image. This achievement was facilitated through collaboration with legal professionals in Japan and the United States.

In collaboration with Sato and other parties, the project has produced a documentary exploring the doge’s history and its evolution within and beyond the cryptocurrency sphere. Tridog emphasized that the group has no intention of strictly enforcing its copyright claim against users and select brands currently utilizing the image to promote its ‘doing only good everyday’ philosophy.

“We want to unify the whole doge community,” said Monarch. “We feel like Dogecoin and a lot of the others, like NFT [nonfungible token] side of things, and people who are into memes and the Reddit world, have always kind of diverged […] it’s all about bringing the tracks together under one cultural umbrella.”

The origin of the Doge image traces back to 2010 when Sato captured a spontaneous moment of Kabosu seated on a yellow sofa in her Japanese home. Monarch claimed to be the first to introduce the term ‘Doge’ on social media, catalyzing the creation of additional memes, the Dogecoin token, and various crypto-themed merchandise.

Tridog indicated that acquiring licensing rights is unlikely to affect the Dogecoin Foundation or the meme token, which continues to utilize the image. Kabosu is set to celebrate her 19th birthday on November 2, with festivities planned in Japan. Despite her age, she has some way to go to match the longevity of the world’s oldest Shiba Inu, which lived to be over 26 years old.
