On the evening of December 16, the cryptocurrency exchange called NFT Trader was hacked, resulting in the theft of a large number of high-value NFTs from users, including the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection, which is estimated to be worth millions of dollars.

NFT Trader disclosed that their platform’s old smart contracts were breached by hackers, urging users to promptly revoke access permissions.

The hacker then posted a series of messages, claiming that the attack was to prevent similar actions by another hacker. However, he still stipulated that victims could pay a ransom to get their stolen NFTs back.

The hacker also made some inexplicable moves, such as returning a Bored Ape NFT and 31 ETH to an investor, but still keeping the staking rewards, as well as returning assets to a number of other users at random.

NFT Trader then stated that the cause of the incident stemmed from a third-party update that affected the source code of old smart contracts. The project has implemented the necessary updates to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

By the morning of December 17, another NFT project, Flooring Protocol, was also attacked, leading to estimated losses of $1.54 million.
