Pro-XEP Lawyer Requests To Be Amicus Curiae For Coinbase Customers

Advocate for XRP, John Deaton, emphasizes the importance of safeguarding customers’ interests, prioritizing their ability to build financial security through crypto investments.

John Deaton, a staunch supporter of XRP, has followed through on his commitment to aid Coinbase customers. He seeks to serve as a friend of the court in their legal battle against the SEC.

In a filing on April 19 in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, Deaton petitions to represent 4,701 Coinbase customers as amicus counsel in the ongoing lawsuit initiated in June 2023.

“I am admitted or otherwise authorized to practice in this court and I appear in this case as counsel for 4,701 Coinbase Customers,” the filing stated.

In an April 18 podcast interview with Fox Business journalist Eleanor Terrett, Deaton emphasized his drive to aid Coinbase customers, aiming to safeguard ordinary individuals seeking to enhance their financial well-being.

“This isn’t about crypto, this is about freedom. This is about upward mobility, this is about people who want a fighting chance, people who want to build a little wealth. They are not looking to get rich, they’re not crypto bros,” he declared.

Following the court’s rejection of its motion to dismiss the lawsuit, Coinbase swiftly lodged an interlocutory appeal in its legal battle against the SEC.

The interlocutory appeal centers on determining whether an investment contract necessitates a contractual element, as highlighted by Coinbase’s chief legal officer Paul Grewal.

Over the past few years, Deaton has filed numerous requests to serve as amicus counsel in support of the cryptocurrency community.

In September 2023, he formally entered as a friend of the court in the LBRY v SEC lawsuit.

Particularly noteworthy was his 2021 amicus brief representing over 6,000 XRP holders in the SEC vs. Ripple Labs case.

Recently, Deaton has been actively campaigning for a Senate seat, aiming to unseat crypto skeptic Senator Elizabeth Warren.

CoinNerd reported on April 15 that Deaton raised $1.36 million in the first quarter of this year for his Senate bid, surpassing Senator Warren’s $1.09 million.

Just over a month ago, Deaton invested $500,000 of his own funds into the Senate campaign and called on his 324,100 followers to help raise an additional $500,000.
